How to Turn Off Google Password Manager
Chrome can store your passwords for you, but you might prefer to use a different solution. Here’s how to turn off Google Password Manager.
You’re creating a new account and password for a specific website using Chrome. Or maybe you’re just signing in to an account that you’ve not signed into before on that device. Up pops a message from Chrome asking if you want to save the password. Sometimes, this can be really useful. Sometimes it can just be annoying and all you want to do is turn off the Google Password Manager in Chrome.
Google Password Manager is a useful way to save passwords in Chrome so that you don’t need to remember them or type them out when you sign in to accounts. But if you’d rather not use that feature, the requests can become tiresome. If this is your experience, then you may want to shut down Google Password Manager altogether. If you’re using a different password manager, or just don’t want the constant pop-ups, then here’s how to turn off Google Password Manager.
How to Turn Off Google Password Manager on Desktop
You can disable Chrome’s built-in password management on your desktop or laptop. This won’t delete any of the passwords you’ve already saved; if you want to remove them, you’ll need to do this manually, as described in one of the sections later in this article. It’s also important to note this only applies to Chrome: if you’re using a third-party password manager, these steps won’t stop it from working. However, turning this feature off will mean that Chrome itself no longer offers to save passwords you enter.
- Open Chrome and click the Three Dots icon at the top-right of the screen.
- Select Passwords & Autofill > Google Password Manager.
- Alternatively, click your Profile icon and then select the Google Password Manager icon that looks like a key.
- On the Passwords tab you’ll see all of the passwords that have already been saved.
- Click Settings in the left-hand menu.
- Toggle Offer to Save Passwords off.
- Google Password Manager will no longer offer to save new passwords. However, your previously saved passwords will remain.
How to Turn Off Saved Logins in Google Chrome on Mobile
If you’re using Chrome on mobile, you can turn off the Google Password Manager on your mobile device, too. These settings don’t sync across devices; you can turn Google Password Manager off on your phone and still leave it active on your desktop if you wish. To turn it off everywhere, you’ll need to do it manually on each device.
- Open Chrome on your mobile device.
- Tap the Three Dots icon.
- Select Password Manager on iOS or Settings > Password Manager on Android.
- Tap Settings on iOS or the Settings icon on Android.
- Toggle Offer to Save Passwords off.
- Chrome will stop saving any new passwords, but previously saved passwords will still be available.
How to Export Your Saved Passwords from Chrome on Desktop
You may decide you no longer want to use this feature because you’ve found a different solution for storing your passwords, such as 1Password. If this is the case, you can save yourself a lot of time and headaches by exporting your passwords from Google Password Manager and then importing to your password manager of choice. You should take care when you do this, however; if anyone gets access to your exported passwords, they can use them to sign in to your accounts. Once you’ve imported the passwords to your new password manager, be sure to delete the export file securely.
- Open Chrome on a desktop or laptop.
- Click the Three Dots icon in the top-right.
- Select Passwords & Autofill > Google Password Manager.
- Alternatively, click your Profile icon in the top right of the screen, and then click the Google Password Manager icon.
- You’ll see a list of all your currently saved passwords.
- Select Settings in the left-hand menu.
- Next to Export Passwords click the Download File button.
- Select where you want to save your exported passwords.
- A CSV file will be exported containing your saved passwords.
- You can use this file to import your logins to your new password manager, following the instructions for the password manager you’re using.
- Once you’ve imported your passwords, be sure to securely delete the file.
How to Export Your Passwords from Google Password Manager on Mobile
If you have different passwords saved in Chrome on your phone, you can also export them to import into your new password manager. Once again, it would be best if you were sure to securely delete this file once you’ve used it to import your logins to your new password manager.
- Open the Chrome app on your phone.
- Tap the Three Dots icon.
- Select Password Manager on iOS or Settings > Password Manager on Android.
- On iOS, tap Settings, or on Android, tap the Settings icon.
- Select Export Passwords.
- A text file will be created with your saved passwords. You can export it using the sharing options of your phone.
- Be sure to securely delete this file once you’ve used it to import your passwords into your new password manager.

Once you’ve exported your passwords from Google Password Manager and imported them into your new password manager, you may wish to delete some or all of the passwords from Google Password Manager completely. Make sure your passwords are saved in your new password manager first, as once you delete them from Google Password Manager, you won’t be able to get them back.
- Open Chrome and click the Three Dots icon in the top right.
- Select Passwords & Autofill > Google Password Manager.
- You can also access the Google Password Manager by clicking your Profile and selecting the Key icon.

How to Delete Saved Logins in Mobile Chrome

- Open the Chrome app.
- Tap the Three Dots icon.
- To delete a specific password, tap Password Manager on iOS or Settings > Password Manager on Android.
- Select the account you want to delete under Saved Passwords.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Delete Password.
- Confirm your decision and the password is deleted.
- To remove all of your passwords at once, launch Chrome and tap the Three Dots icon.
- Select Clear Browsing Data.
- Ensure that only Saved Passwords is checked.
- Set the Time Range to All Time.
- Tap Clear Browsing Data.
- Your passwords are now deleted.
Turning Off Google Password Manager
Learning how to turn this feature off allows you to stop Chrome from constantly asking you if you want to save new passwords. You can then choose a password manager of your own, rather than having to rely on one from a company that doesn’t have the strongest reputation when it comes to keeping your personal data private. You can export your saved passwords and then import them into your new password manager, rather than having to add them all again manually. Once you’ve done so, you can delete your logins from the tool completely. However, if you do export your passwords, make sure to delete the file as soon as you’ve used it, as anyone with access to it can use it to sign in to your accounts.
